When I say, Secure Your Wireless, I assume that everybody is at least securing their wireless network with some kind of security, I hope! If you haven’t, then let me tell you, anybody with a little computer knowledge can access your computer on a open wireless network with jsut little help from some free online downloadable hacking tools.

Scared? How about this. If you are still using a WEP encryption for your wireless security, PLEASE, PLEASE change it to WPA2 (What if mine doesn’t support WPA2, haha, then it’s time to upgrade to new equipments. BTW, we have some WL N router as low as $34.99 instore). Why? One of our grade 11 student volunteer, with a step-by-step instruction for a free downloadable linux software, decrypted all the WEP security codes around our store in LESS THAN 10 MINUTES!

Another useful feature of the newer equipments is Guest Network. This lets you keep your internal network behind the WPA2, while keeping guests roped off with the weaker WEP protocal to access internet.

One more advanced setting, you can configure your router to only accept connections from known MAC addresses within the network. (I assume you know what MAC address is). Although intruder can still easily spoof a MAC address from a trusted client. But HEY, let me tell you another fact, network is never 100% gauranteed safe, same as any AntiVirus/AntiSpyware software, no matter how good they are, you are never 100% protected.

If the crooks aren’t able to convince you to visit their phony banking webpage, the next step is to get you there agianst your will.
One way to do that is to poison the DNS cache you are using. The DNS server translates URLs into IP address. By exploiting flaws in the DNS software, crooks can redirect you to any sight of their choice, EVEN you type in the CORRECT URL of your bank.
To avoid this, Google Public DNS is free and effective. Google has implemented many of the recommanded safeguards against cache poisoning.
To change the DNS on your PC, go to Network Connectionsn right click on your connection, double click Internet Protocol. Then simply enter the Preferred DNS of 8.8.8.8. and alternate of 8.8.4.4 and clikc OK.

Keep checking back as we will be posting more Network and PC security tips. Leave a comment and get a FREE gift next time you visit the store.
